Why Many SMEs Struggle with Event Management

For many SMEs, managing events online quickly becomes more complicated than expected.

Businesses often end up juggling:

External ticketing platforms

Email inboxes

Manual attendee lists

Multiple WordPress plugins

Spreadsheet tracking

Third-party booking systems

While these tools can work initially, they often create additional admin, fragmented workflows and ongoing maintenance headaches.

Many organisations simply want a straightforward way to:

Promote events

Collect registrations

Sell tickets online

Manage attendees

Keep everything connected to their own website

without relying on complicated systems.

A Simpler Approach to WordPress Events

WD Events Lite was developed as a lightweight WordPress event system designed specifically for SMEs, agencies and organisations that want a cleaner and more affordable way to manage events.

Instead of relying on large event ecosystems or external platforms, WD Events Lite keeps event management directly inside your WordPress website.

The system supports:

Event listings

Responsive event pages

Free registrations and RSVP forms

Paid ticketing with Stripe Checkout

Attendee management

CSV exports

Optional Google Maps integration

This creates a much simpler workflow for businesses running workshops, networking events, training courses, open days, webinars and local events.

Why Lightweight Event Systems Matter

Many WordPress event platforms become increasingly dependent on additional plugins and integrations.

Over time this can lead to:

Plugin conflicts

Styling issues

Slower websites

Higher maintenance overhead

Difficult upgrades

More development work

For SMEs and agencies, the real cost is often not the software itself — it is the ongoing operational complexity.

WD Events Lite focuses on keeping the stack lean and modular.

Businesses can choose only the features they actually need:

Events Lite

Tickets

Tickets Plus

Maps

This helps reduce unnecessary complexity while still allowing future expansion.

Free Registrations and Paid Ticketing

Many smaller organisations do not need a large enterprise booking system.

They simply need:

A professional event page

A clean registration process

Secure online payments

Easy attendee tracking

WD Events Lite supports both free and paid events.

The Tickets module adds built-in RSVP forms with attendee management and CSV export functionality.

Tickets Plus extends the system with Stripe Checkout integration, allowing businesses to securely sell tickets online without needing WooCommerce.

This creates a cleaner and more affordable solution for many SME websites.

Built for Divi and Flexible WordPress Websites

WD Events Lite was designed to work well with Divi-based websites and custom WordPress layouts.

Using shortcode-based rendering and flexible templates, agencies can:

Build custom event pages

Maintain brand consistency

Create responsive layouts

Reduce frontend conflicts

Extend functionality more easily

Optional Google Maps support can also be added to event pages using simple latitude and longitude fields or address fallback.

A Practical Alternative for SMEs

For many organisations, event management software has become unnecessarily complicated.

WD Events Lite focuses on the practical features most SMEs actually need while keeping events connected directly to their own website.

If you are looking for a lightweight and affordable WordPress event system for registrations, ticketing and event promotion, WD Events Lite can help simplify your event workflow.

Helping customers find your business quickly and easily is one of the simplest ways to improve website performance. For SMEs using WordPress, custom mapping and location services provide a powerful way to connect online visitors with real-world locations — whether that’s offices, branches, franchisees, or service areas.

Done properly, mapping is not just a design feature. It supports user experience, local SEO, trust, and conversions — all at the same time.

Why Location Visibility Matters for SMEs

Modern customers expect clarity. If they can’t quickly work out where you’re based, which location serves them, or how to reach you, they’re far more likely to leave and look elsewhere.

Clear location information helps answer high-intent questions instantly:

Is this business local to me?

Which office or branch should I contact?

How do I get there?

Do they cover my area?

Removing these barriers directly improves enquiry rates and customer confidence.

What Are Custom Mapping and Location Services in WordPress?

Custom mapping goes far beyond embedding a basic map from Google Maps.

For WordPress websites, it can include:

Interactive maps styled to match your brand

Multiple office, branch, or franchisee locations

Clickable markers with contact details and CTAs

Location filtering by town, county, or region

“Find my nearest location” functionality

Mobile-friendly directions and navigation

Location data structured for SEO

The result is a mapping system that supports users rather than just displaying information.

Key Benefits of Custom Location Mapping

Improved User Experience

Customers don’t want to scroll endlessly or search PDFs for addresses. A dedicated locations page with interactive mapping allows visitors to find the right location in seconds — especially on mobile devices.

Increased Enquiries and Physical Visits

Clear directions, visible proximity, and relevant contact details reduce hesitation. When customers know exactly where you are and how easy you are to reach, they are far more likely to take action.

Stronger Trust and Business Credibility

Displaying multiple locations reinforces scale, stability, and legitimacy. For franchise and multi-office businesses, it demonstrates that you are established, accessible, and accountable.

Better Local SEO Performance

Well-implemented mapping supports local search by reinforcing geographic relevance. Combined with optimised location pages, it can help your business appear more frequently in:

“Near me” searches

Town and regional searches

Location-specific service queries

Easy Scalability as You Grow

As your business expands, new locations can be added without restructuring your website. This is particularly valuable for franchise networks and growing SMEs.

Common Use Cases for WordPress Mapping

Custom mapping is especially effective for:

Multi-office professional services

Retailers and showrooms

Franchise and licence-based businesses

Property, construction, and trade services

Healthcare, education, and training providers

Hospitality and leisure brands

Anywhere physical presence matters, mapping enhances usability and conversion potential.

Why WordPress Is Ideal for Custom Location Systems

WordPress offers the flexibility to build location systems that are:

Fully manageable via the admin dashboard

Structured using custom post types for locations

Integrated with contact forms and booking tools

Optimised for performance and accessibility

Built to scale without clutter or duplication

Most importantly, it allows mapping to be tailored around your business model, not forced into generic layouts.

Make Location a Strength, Not an Afterthought

Your website should actively help customers move from interest to action. When location data is clear, interactive, and optimised, it quietly supports better engagement, stronger SEO, and higher-quality enquiries.

For SMEs, this is one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make to a WordPress website.

Technology is evolving faster than ever - and so are your customers’ expectations.

Looking Ahead: Is Your Business Ready?

Technology is evolving faster than ever – and so are your customers’ expectations. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), building a future-proof digital presence isn’t just about staying current – it’s about staying relevant. Here’s how to ensure your business is ready for what’s next.

Adaptability Is Your Superpower

The digital landscape doesn’t stand still. The tools you rely on today could be obsolete tomorrow. That’s why flexibility is non-negotiable. Choose platforms like WordPress or Shopify – ecosystems that evolve, scale, and integrate seamlessly with other tools. These platforms support plugins, third-party apps, and custom development, giving you the freedom to adapt as your needs change.

Avoid vendor lock-in. Proprietary systems may seem convenient initially, but they often restrict growth and innovation down the line. Instead, invest in open, customisable platforms that let you pivot quickly, whether it’s adding eCommerce, connecting CRM systems, or enabling multilingual support.

AI Is Here to Stay

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’ – it’s fast becoming essential. From AI-powered chatbots that handle customer queries 24/7 to tools that streamline content creation, AI can boost efficiency while enhancing user experience.

Start with small wins:

Automate common support queries with a chatbot.

Use AI writing assistants to optimise blog content.

Try tools like predictive analytics to better understand customer behaviour.

As you build confidence, explore deeper integrations – think AI-driven personalisation engines that tailor product suggestions, or machine-learning algorithms to optimise your ad campaigns in real time. The key is not to fear AI, but to use it strategically.

Content Is Still (Strategically) King

Yes, content is still king – but only when it’s created with strategy. Quality content builds trust, improves search engine visibility, and supports your sales funnel at every stage.

Here’s how SMEs can create content that works harder:

Publish regularly. A steady stream of blogs shows you’re active, knowledgeable, and relevant.

Think evergreen. Create cornerstone pieces that remain useful over time – FAQs, how-to guides, and downloadable resources.

Repurpose smartly. Turn one blog into a LinkedIn post, a short video, an email series, and a lead magnet. Get the most out of every asset.

A strong content library becomes your business’s digital backbone – attracting, educating, and converting prospects long after it’s published.

Privacy and Consent Will Get Stricter

Customers are more privacy-conscious than ever, and legislation is following suit. GDPR was just the beginning. Regulations are evolving, and businesses that take data protection seriously will earn trust – and avoid costly fines.

What SMEs should do now:

Review your cookie policy and ensure it’s compliant.

Implement clear, user-friendly consent banners.

Make it easy for users to manage their data preferences.

Keep your email marketing lists clean and clearly opt-in.

Staying ahead of privacy changes isn’t just about compliance – it’s about building credibility with your audience.

Build a Resilient Brand

While tools and tactics may change, a strong brand endures. Your brand is more than a logo or colour scheme – it’s your values, your voice, and the trust you earn over time.

Future-proof your brand by:

Clarifying your message. Make sure your core value proposition is simple, clear, and consistent across channels.

Focusing on trust. Use social proof, case studies, and testimonials to build credibility.

Being human. People connect with people. Show personality, own your story, and engage authentically.

A resilient brand withstands changes in algorithms, platforms, and market dynamics – because it’s built on relationships, not trends.

Final Word: Embrace Agility Over Certainty

Future-proofing your business isn’t about predicting every technological shift or jumping on every trend. It’s about staying agile, curious, and ready to adapt. The SMEs that thrive tomorrow will be the ones who listen, learn, and lead with purpose today.

Need help applying these tips to your own website or digital marketing strategy?

Marketing teams pour time, energy, and budget into driving traffic. You run campaigns, produce content, push social media, and optimise ads – all to get users onto your website.

Your Website Should Work for Your Marketing, Not Against It

Marketing teams pour time, energy, and budget into driving traffic. You run campaigns, produce content, push social media, and optimise ads – all to get users onto your website.

But what happens when they actually arrive?

If your website isn’t pulling its weight, all that effort goes to waste. Traffic without conversions means a poor return on investment. Fortunately, many website issues that hurt performance are easily fixable. Here are five common culprits holding your site back – and what to do about them:

1. It’s Too Slow

A sluggish website is one of the fastest ways to lose a visitor. Not only do users bounce quickly if your site takes too long to load, but Google also penalises slow sites in search results. You should be aiming for page load times of under three seconds.

Quick fix: Use tools like GTmetrix or Google PageSpeed Insights to run a speed audit. They’ll highlight specific areas to optimise – from image compression to script loading issues.

2. Poor Mobile Experience

With more than 60% of web traffic coming from mobile devices, a website that doesn’t work seamlessly on smartphones and tablets is a deal-breaker. If users have to pinch, zoom, or scroll endlessly sideways, they’re gone.

Quick fix: Embrace responsive design and prioritise mobile-first layouts. Make sure buttons are tappable, fonts are legible, and content stacks cleanly on smaller screens.

3. Vague or Missing CTAs

Your website should clearly guide visitors towards the next step – whether that’s booking a discovery call, downloading a resource, or making a purchase. But too often, websites rely on weak or unclear calls to

Quick fix: Make CTAs bold, visible, and benefit-driven. Swap out generic phrases like “Click here” for specific, compelling ones like “Get Your Free Website Audit” or “Download the Starter Kit”.

4. No Lead Capture Strategy

If your site doesn’t actively collect leads, you’re leaving money on the table. Not every visitor is ready to buy immediately – but with the right follow-up, they might be soon.

Quick fix: Add lead capture points such as newsletter signups, downloadable guides, or exit-intent popups. Gated content is a great way to exchange value for an email address and begin nurturing that lead.

5. Outdated Design

First impressions count. If your website looks old, cluttered, or confusing, visitors may assume your business is too. A clean, modern design communicates professionalism and builds trust instantly.

Quick fix: Aim for a fresh, minimal layout with clear typography, intuitive navigation, and strong visual hierarchy. Ideally, you should be reviewing and refreshing your design every 3–5 years to stay current with UX trends.

Bonus Tip: Weak Analytics Setup

Without proper analytics tracking, you can’t measure success. Ensure Google Analytics and conversion goals are set up correctly.

Final Word

Your website is more than just a digital presence – it’s your online storefront, your top salesperson, and often your first impression. When built and maintained properly, it should amplify your marketing efforts, not undermine them.

A few strategic tweaks can lead to significantly better performance, more conversions, and a much stronger return on your marketing investment.

It’s easy to assume your website and campaigns are doing their job if you're getting traffic.

Understanding the Full Customer Journey

It’s tempting to think that strong website traffic is a sign your digital efforts are working. After all, people are finding you online – so that must mean your campaigns are effective, right? Not necessarily.

If visitors are landing on your site but failing to take the next step – whether that’s making an enquiry, signing up, or making a purchase – it’s a clear signal that something is off. The issue might not lie in your visibility, but rather in your digital marketing funnel.

Understanding the full customer journey – from first interaction to final conversion – is essential. Each stage of the funnel needs to be carefully designed to guide users forward: attracting their attention, building trust, and encouraging action. If any part of that journey is disjointed, confusing, or uninspiring, you risk losing valuable leads.

So don’t just track traffic – track engagement, retention, and conversion. A well-optimised funnel turns clicks into customers.

What Is a Funnel, Really?

A digital marketing funnel maps out the journey from a user’s first interaction with your brand to their eventual conversion. It’s typically broken down into three stages: awareness, consideration, and decision. Without clarity at each stage, you’re likely losing leads along the way.

Common Funnel Leaks

Users bounce because the landing page doesn’t deliver what the ad promised

There’s no clear next step, like a form or CTA

The follow-up process is slow or non-existent

Inconsistent messaging between ads and landing pages

Patching the Funnel

Fixing your funnel doesn’t mean an overhaul. Sometimes it’s as simple as:

Adding a lead magnet to capture emails (e.g., free guides, templates)

Using retargeting ads for site visitors

Creating tailored content for each stage of the funnel

Implementing lead scoring to prioritise follow-ups

Why Funnels Matter for ROI

A well-built funnel increases the lifetime value of customers and reduces acquisition costs. It allows you to personalise communication, build trust, and convert more efficiently.

Final Word

Every SME should know their funnel inside out. It’s not just about attracting visitors – it’s about converting them. The good news? Small tweaks often lead to big results.

Staying Ahead of SEO in a Rapidly Evolving Search World

SEO isn’t dead – it’s just smarter. In 2025, search engine optimisation has become more nuanced, more AI-driven, and more about user experience than ever before. But that doesn’t mean it’s out of reach for SMEs.

User Intent Is Everything

Gone are the days of keyword stuffing. Today, Google’s algorithms aim to understand what users really mean when they search. That means your content must answer real questions, provide value, and be structured in a way that makes sense. Think pillar pages, FAQs, and value-driven blogs.

Local SEO Still Packs a Punch

For SMEs, especially those with a physical presence, local SEO remains a vital channel. Regularly updating your Google Business Profile, gathering reviews, and posting location-specific content can dramatically boost local visibility. Encourage satisfied clients to leave Google reviews, and use local backlinks to improve relevance.

Mobile and Voice Search Are Growing

As voice assistants become more mainstream and mobile usage increases, search phrases are becoming more conversational. Tailoring your content for natural language queries and quick answers will keep you competitive. Try incorporating schema markup and targeting question-based queries.

AI + Human = SEO Gold

AI tools like ChatGPT can support content creation, but human insight is essential. The winning strategy? Use AI to speed up the process and humans to make it truly resonate. Conduct keyword research, build topic clusters, and ensure content remains aligned with your brand tone.

Measure What Matters

Track metrics beyond rankings – such as time on page, conversion rates, and bounce rates – to understand real SEO performance. Integrate SEO with your broader marketing goals.

Final Word

Staying visible in 2025 means focusing on user experience, answering real needs, and embracing the right mix of automation and authenticity.

Need help applying these tips to your own website or digital marketing strategy?

Why WordPress Remains the Go-To for SMEs

In the ever-changing digital landscape, one thing remains consistent: WordPress continues to dominate the SME website scene. But why, in 2025, is this platform still considered the best choice for small and medium-sized enterprises?

Flexibility Without the Price Tag

One of WordPress’s biggest strengths lies in its adaptability. Whether you’re launching a sleek brochure site, a service-based portfolio, or a full eCommerce shop, WordPress can scale with your needs. Crucially, it allows marketing teams to make changes without developer dependency—ideal for SMEs where agility is key.

Built for Integration

From Mailchimp to HubSpot and Google Analytics to GoCardless and Stripe, WordPress integrates seamlessly with the most popular digital marketing tools. This means you can streamline your campaigns and reporting without needing custom code. Marketing teams benefit from real-time insights and automation that simplify lead generation and performance tracking.

SEO Ready Out of the Box

Search engine visibility is a non-negotiable for SMEs. With plugins like Yoast and Rank Math, WordPress makes it easy for non-technical marketers to optimise on-page content, metadata, and site structure. Add in tools for sitemap creation and structured data, and you’re well-equipped for organic growth.

Mobile-First and Fast

Google prioritises mobile speed and usability. The latest WordPress themes are not only responsive but also optimised for Core Web Vitals, giving you a head start in search rankings and user satisfaction. Combined with powerful caching tools and image optimisation plugins, WordPress makes it easier than ever to deliver a seamless mobile experience.

Security and Scalability

With regular updates, a large support community, and thousands of plugins built with security in mind, WordPress provides a scalable and safe foundation for any growing SME.

Final Word

WordPress continues to deliver on ease of use, flexibility, and marketing performance. For SMEs looking to grow in 2025, it remains the smartest choice.

Need help applying these tips to your own website or digital marketing strategy?

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is set to reshape how UK businesses approach accessibility, even post-Brexit.

Introduction

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) is set to reshape how UK businesses approach accessibility, even post-Brexit. While the UK is no longer bound by EU law, businesses trading with the European market must comply. This guide breaks down what EAA compliance means, who it affects, key dates, and the potential impact on UK businesses.

What is the European Accessibility Act (EAA)?

The EAA is an EU directive aimed at improving accessibility for people with disabilities across various industries. It mandates that certain products and services must be accessible to all users, ensuring inclusivity in sectors such as e-commerce, banking, telecommunications, and digital services.

The directive was adopted in 2019, and EU member states must implement it by June 28, 2025. This means that any UK business trading in the EU will need to ensure their services and products meet these new accessibility requirements.

Key Implementation Dates

If your business is affected by the EAA, these are the key dates to keep in mind:

April 17, 2019 – The EAA was formally adopted by the European Union.

June 28, 2022 – EU member states had to incorporate the EAA into national law.

June 28, 2025 – The deadline for businesses to comply with the EAA. From this date, all affected products and services must meet the required accessibility standards.

June 28, 2030 – The end of the transition period for certain pre-existing products, such as self-service terminals, which were on the market before 2025.

For UK businesses trading with the EU, compliance by June 2025 is essential to avoid potential legal or market access issues.

Who Does the EAA Affect?

While the UK government is not enforcing the EAA domestically, it still impacts businesses that:

Sell products or services in the EU market.

Work with EU-based businesses that require compliance in their supply chain.

Operate in sectors covered by the directive, such as digital services, e-commerce, and public sector contracts.

If your business falls into any of these categories, ensuring compliance is crucial to maintaining access to EU markets.

Key Areas of Compliance

Businesses must consider accessibility in several key areas, including:

Websites & Mobile Apps – Digital platforms must be navigable using assistive technologies and comply with accessibility standards like WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines).

E-commerce – Online shopping platforms must offer an inclusive user experience, ensuring people with disabilities can browse, purchase, and interact with customer service.

Banking & Financial Services – ATMs, banking apps, and financial transactions must be accessible to those with visual, auditory, or cognitive impairments.

Electronic Devices & Software – Any digital hardware or software sold within the EU must be designed with accessibility in mind.

The Impact on UK Businesses

1. Increased Costs and Compliance Efforts

For businesses unaccustomed to accessibility regulations, compliance may require investments in web development, design adjustments, and staff training. However, these costs can be offset by broadening customer reach and improving user experience. See how Google are approaching the European Accessibility Act (EAA) here.

2. Competitive Advantage

Companies that prioritise accessibility may gain an edge over competitors who lag behind. An inclusive business attracts a wider audience and enhances brand reputation.

3. Legal and Financial Risks

Non-compliance could result in EU market access restrictions or potential legal challenges. Businesses should proactively align with EAA requirements to avoid disruption.

4. Boosting Customer Trust

Accessibility improvements benefit all users, not just those with disabilities. Enhanced usability can lead to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty.

How to Prepare for EAA Compliance

Conduct an Accessibility Audit – Review your website, apps, and digital services for compliance with WCAG and other relevant standards.

Implement Changes Early – Adapt your digital platforms, products, and customer service processes before the June 2025 deadline.

Seek Expert Guidance – Accessibility specialists or web developers with compliance experience can help ensure a smooth transition.

Train Staff – Educate employees on accessibility requirements and best practices to maintain long-term compliance.

Conclusion

While the EAA is an EU directive, its influence extends to UK businesses operating in European markets. Ensuring accessibility not only helps businesses comply but also fosters inclusivity, enhances user experience, and strengthens market presence.

With the 2025 deadline approaching, preparing now will put businesses in a strong position to continue trading smoothly in the EU.

Brewing the Perfect Website: The Art of Great Web Design

I don’t know about you, but I find that building a website is a lot like making the perfect cup of tea. It’s an art, a science, and a process that requires just the right balance of elements.

Why Great Web Design is Like a Great Cup of Tea

I don’t know about you, but I find that building a website is a lot like making the perfect cup of tea. It’s an art, a science, and a process that requires just the right balance of elements. Sure, you can dunk a teabag in lukewarm water and call it tea – but let’s be honest, that’s just disappointing.

The same goes for websites. You can throw something together with a quick template, or use a free online builder, but will it really engage your audience? Will it leave a lasting impression, drive conversions, or reflect your brand in the best possible light? The reality is, much like a perfect brew, a great website needs the right ingredients, patience, and a little finesse.

The Recipe for a Well-Built Website

At Works Digital, we believe that crafting an effective website is a carefully refined process. Here’s how we do it:

1. The Right Ingredients

A proper cup of tea starts with quality tea leaves, fresh water, and the right temperature. Similarly, a great website starts with solid foundations:

Strategy: Understanding your audience, goals, and brand identity.

Design: A user-friendly, aesthetically pleasing interface that reflects your brand.

Development: A robust backend that ensures seamless performance and functionality.

2. The Perfect Steeping Time

Just as you wouldn’t rush a good cuppa, building a great website takes time. Cutting corners or rushing the process can lead to weak results. We take the time to:

Listen: Understanding your unique business needs and audience.

Build: Crafting a website that is fast, responsive, and optimised for SEO.

Support: Ensuring your website continues to perform well post-launch.

3. A Blend of Essential Features

Much like sugar, milk, or a slice of lemon, different websites require different touches. Whether it’s e-commerce functionality, lead generation tools, or interactive elements, we ensure everything blends together seamlessly.

Why the Details Matter

The details can make or break both a cup of tea and a website. Imagine a site that loads slowly, has broken links, or isn’t mobile-friendly – it’s the digital equivalent of a weak, forgotten cuppa.

At Works Digital, we focus on:

Speed & Performance: Ensuring fast loading times and smooth navigation.

SEO & Visibility: Helping your website rank well on search engines.

User Experience (UX): Creating an intuitive and engaging journey for your visitors.

Ready for a Proper Digital Brew?

I’m Phil Ward, Digital Director at Works Digital, and I specialise in helping businesses build websites that are strong, smooth, and perfectly blended for their audience. If your current site feels more like a lacklustre, neglected cup of tea rather than a builder’s brew, it might be time for a refresh.

We work with SMEs, marketing departments, and agencies looking for reliable digital support

Let’s brew something great together.

Do you remember the days when inserting a CD-ROM felt like opening a portal to the future?

Do you remember the days when inserting a CD-ROM felt like opening a portal to the future? When Macromedia Flash ruled the internet, and websites proudly boasted splash screens, animated intros, and (regrettably) auto-playing MIDI music?

Welcome to the era when Digital was New Media – a time of pixelated pioneers, 56k dial-up symphonies, and a web experience that often felt more like an interactive DVD menu than the sleek, algorithm-driven beast we know today.

The ‘New Media’ Revolution

Back in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Digital was still a fresh frontier. Marketers, designers, and developers alike were learning how to harness its potential. If you wanted to deliver cutting-edge interactive content, you weren’t launching an app or embedding a TikTok – no, you were commissioning a CD-ROM experience.

CDs weren’t just for music; they were premium digital real estate. Brands invested heavily in multimedia-driven content, from immersive product catalogues to interactive brand experiences – often boasting 3D renderings that, at the time, looked like something out of The Matrix.

One famous example of CD-ROM marketing overkill was America Online (AOL)’s relentless free trial discs. AOL practically carpet-bombed mailboxes, inserting their sign-up CDs into magazines, cereal boxes, and yes, even hiring people to hand them out on street corners. The strategy was so over-the-top that at one point 50% of the CDs produced worldwide had an AOL logo on them!

That’s right – half of the world’s CD production went to those “free hours” AOL disks. We used them, we made coasters out of them, and we joked that you could build a house from the excess CDs. Ridiculous as it was, it worked – millions of users got online through those shiny discs. Physical media was king, and if you wanted someone to experience your digital content, you mailed it to them. It was an era when “You’ve Got Mail!” arrived by postal mail and email.

And then there was Macromedia Flash, the creative powerhouse that turned the web into a playground of animated logos, games, and those dreaded “Skip Intro” buttons. Every designer worth their salt had a Flash-powered portfolio, and businesses revelled in dazzling, overly complex navigation systems that made finding basic information an adventure.

From ‘Click to Enter’ to Instant Engagement

Fast forward to today, and the ‘New Media’ of yesteryear has become the ancient history of digital. CDs? Relics. Flash? Extinct, thanks to Apple, (RIP, 2020). Today’s digital landscape is all about speed, personalisation, and omnichannel marketing.

Where a brand’s digital presence once lived on a disc or a heavy website, now it’s fluid – seamlessly integrated across social media, dynamic web platforms, and AI-driven customer experiences.

Then vs Now: A Digital Transformation

Then (2000s)

Now (2020s)

CD-ROM catalogues

AI-driven product recommendations

Flash websites with loading screens

Responsive, mobile-first UX

Email newsletters with clip art

Personalised email automation

Banner ads

Programmatic, targeted advertising

SEO = keyword stuffing

SEO = quality content + user experience

Digital marketing is no longer about making people sit through an experience – it’s about getting them where they want to go instantly. Attention spans are shorter, engagement is smarter, and customers expect instant value.

What We Can Learn from the ‘New Media’ Era

Despite its quirks, there’s a lot the New Media days can teach us:

Creativity is king. Even in an age of algorithms, engaging visuals and storytelling still drive success.

Interactivity matters. The best digital marketing isn’t just seen – it’s experienced, whether through immersive web design or social media engagement.

Nostalgia sells. Brands that understand their past can use it to craft an authentic identity today. (Just look at how vinyl, ‘90s fashion, and retro aesthetics keep making comebacks.)

The Future of Digital: What’s Next?

If CDs and Flash were once the height of innovation, what’s next? AI-generated content, hyper-personalisation, and immersive, interactive experiences are already defining the next phase of digital marketing.

But one thing’s for sure – just like Flash websites and CD-ROM brochures, today’s cutting-edge tech will one day be a nostalgic relic. So let’s embrace the evolution, experiment with new tools, and, who knows? Maybe in 20 years, we’ll be reminiscing about the TikTok era the way we now remember ‘Click to Enter’ homepages.

Works Digital have helped many clients through previous digital revolutions – we can help you through your digital evolution.
Let’s chat.
